The LHA Trust Funds Center for Healthcare Enterprise Risk is proud to announce our two-part Fundamentals in Louisiana Healthcare Risk course. The Fundamentals program will look at healthcare risk across the organization to proactively identify risks, mitigate organization exposure, and respond when unforeseen situations transpire. Attendees of this course will be provided with a comprehensive overview of organizational risk exposures, best tools, and innovative ideas to mitigate these risks and gain a general understanding of basic insurance concepts related to those risks. The course will serve as a strong beginning for those new to their roles and an excellent refresher for the more experienced professional. Key risk concepts include identifying and managing clinical, environmental and technology risks, employee safety, contractual liability and related insurance products.
Fundamentals of Louisiana Healthcare Enterprise Risk: Part 1 - April 13
Fundamentals in Louisiana Healthcare Risk Part 1 focuses on fundamentals, clinical exposures and plan development offering an ideal educational foundation for new risk managers and an excellent refresher for the more experienced healthcare risk management professional. The course will present an overview of key risk management concepts:

Healthcare Risk Management Fundamentals
This domain covers risk management components & definition, the role of the healthcare risk management professional, risk identification, communication of risk issues, compliance with regulatory agencies and risk management resources.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Define the role of the healthcare risk manager.
- Identify risk identification tools.
- Describe basic risk management resources.
Healthcare Clinical Risk Challenges & Opportunities
This domain covers high-risk areas, national patient safety goals, adverse events, EMR documentation essentials, patient complaints and end of life issues.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify high-risk areas and potential adverse events.
- Discuss patient complaint/grievance process and follow up.
- Describe End of Life documents.
Managing Clinical Risks
This domain covers patient safety-incident reporting tools, deep dive/investigations/reviews, patient safety organizations, rounding, informed consent, consent to treat and EMTALA.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify steps to investigate incidents.
- Describe a PSO.
- Discuss how to report an EMTALA violation and address complaints.
Information Technology Risks
This domain covers IT risks, cybersecurity, email security and password security.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Understand the cyber landscape in the healthcare environment.
- Identify areas of IT or cyber risks and exposures.
- Summarize the red flags of common cyber claims.
- Discuss cybersecurity best practices to help minimize exposure.
Physician Practice/Clinic/Urgent Care Risks
This domain covers communication, patient satisfaction, patient safety/quality metrics, assessment/discharge process & documentation, medical records, medication safety, diagnostic testing, referrals, supply & equipment management, environment of care and emergency preparedness.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Review valuable risk management tips to protect your organization and customers.
- Identify patient care opportunities in the MD’s office/clinic/urgent care related to communication.
- Identify patient care opportunities in the MD’s office/clinic/urgent care related to documentation.
- Identify patient care opportunities in the MD’s office/clinic/urgent care related to medication safety.
- Identify patient care opportunities in the MD’s office/clinic/urgent care related to patient rights.
- Identify patient care opportunities in the MD’s office/clinic/urgent care related to environmental safety.
Risk Management Plan Development
This domain covers risk management planning, including how to develop one, obtain plan approval and an annual plan review.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify the process for developing a risk management plan.
- Identify the entities involved in developing a risk management plan.
- Describe the program components in a risk management plan.




ASHRM Day 1: This program has been approved for a total of 5.75 contact hours of continuing education credit toward fulfillment of the requirements of ASHRM designations of fellow (FASHRM) and distinguished fellow (DFASHRM) and towards certified professional in healthcare risk management (CPHRM) renewal.
Nursing Day 1: 5.75 nursing contact hours by the Louisiana Hospital Association for complete attendance of the program. The Louisiana Hospital Association is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing – CE Provider #39.
Fundamentals of Louisiana Healthcare Enterprise Risk: Part 2 - April 14
Fundamentals in Louisiana Healthcare Risk Part 2 focuses on environmental exposures, technology risk, workplace safety, contractual liability and related insurance coverages.

Employee Safety & Worker’s Compensation
This domain covers employee safety, OSHA, exposure screening, ergonomics in workplace and Worker’s Compensation.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify elements of an effective Employee Safety Plan.
- Discuss elements of an effective Workers Comp claims management program.
- Locate and complete the First Report of Injury form.
- Report a claim to LHA TF.
- Define the second injury fund and the employer’s responsibilities.
- Perform an internal claims investigation.
Insurance Coverage, Contract, Claims & Liability Risks
This domain covers negligence, professional liability, general liability, claims management, MMSEA Section 111 reporting, credentialing, contract management and insurance.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Understand the burden of proof required of a plaintiff when pursuing a tort claim in Louisiana for both general and professional liability claims.
- Describe the Louisiana Medical Malpractice statute.
- Discuss the coverage provided by GL and PL LHA TF.
- Describe how to evaluate contracts between healthcare entities and outside vendors with respect to liability exposures of both parties.
- Identify best practices relative to credentialing processes in light of recent Louisiana case law.
Managing Environmental Risks
This domain covers management plan development & review, environment by design, fire & life safety, emergency management & preparedness, workplace violence prevention, equipment management, utility systems management, product alerts/recalls, hazardous materials and waste management.
At the end of this module, participants should be able to:
- Identify elements of an Environment of Care Management Plan.
- Identify elements of a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention Plan.
- Identify elements of a Hazardous Materials Waste Management Plan.
