The Basic Healthcare Security for Staff course is a two part train-the-trainer course designed to prepare you with the necessary materials and information to transfer the knowledge learned to others in your organization.

Overview

With concerns about personal safety increasing among healthcare staff and the community, expectations for facilities to provide the safest care environment possible is paramount for healthcare organization staff to be knowledgeable of security processes.

The responsibility to create a safe environment of care rests with all healthcare staff, regardless of job title. This two-part, 16-hour course is designed as a Train-the-Trainer course that will prepare you with the necessary materials and information to transfer the knowledge learned to others in your organization.

The Basic Healthcare Security for Staff course is designed to be applicable to all staff from the physician to the CNA, the Administrator to Registration Clerk, or the Security Officer. Each student will be provided with a workbook to guide them through each module of the course and then serve as a reference for training others.

A digital copy of the presentation will also be provided upon completion of the course.

Anyone interested in healthcare security, including security officers, those responsible for organizational security or responding to security events at the facility, and risk managers.

Agenda

Session 1: Essentials to a Successful Security Program
June 24, 2025, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The first session of the course will focus on situational awareness and prevention, verbal and written communication, and effective de-escalation strategies. We will explore practical ways to incorporate the strategies discussed into your processes.

This module includes briefings on legal and regulatory issues related to security actions in a healthcare setting including discussion about weapons, weapons screening, and the 2nd Amendment; restraint use; and medical holds.

Session 2: Security Response & Action
July 22, 2025, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The second session of this course will focus on preparing staff for response and subsequent actions including effective documentation. We will concentrate on emergency response protocols, patrol procedures, and documentation processes like report writing.

This module will prepare you to share information with others at your facility.
