Proper Communication After an Adverse Event

Patient Compassion

Overview

The mandate to disclose unanticipated outcomes to patients and families has existed since 2001, and yet those conversations are as difficult to conduct as they were then.

What makes that so? And is there anything that can be done to clarify the process to make it easier to feel better about it?

In this online presentation, you'll learn how to strip away the parts of disclosure that are already familiar so that you can identify where additional mental and emotional preparation is required. You'll identify ways to address sensitive issues and deal with difficult emotions — the patient's, the family's, and your own — during the conversation.

Finally, you'll learn tips for improving conversation with patients and families in all situations.
