Overview

Challenges to workers’ compensation and employee safety continue to intensify. Strengthening your understanding of current risks and changes in the workers’ compensation industry has never been more critical.

That’s why the LHA Trust Funds offers its annual Workers’ Compensation Symposium at no cost to members of the LHA Workers’ Compensation Trust Fund.

Experts and peer leaders discuss hot topics in healthcare employee health and safety as they share tools, ideas, and information that will help you develop stronger workers’ compensation and prevention of injury plans. Registration is required for attendance.

8:30 am – 8:45 am: Introductions


8:45 am – 9:45 am: Medical Marijuana Update

Louisiana workers compensation law is slowly changing and adapting to the whirlwind of changes that has happened over the last few years vis-a-vis Medical Marijuana laws. This presentation will focus on the most recent changes and strategy tips for handling claims.

10:00 am – 11:15 am: Creating and Sustaining a Transitional Duty Program

The presentation will focus on the value of transitional duty programs for both the employer and the employee and how each benefit. Insight will be offered on how to imagine, develop and implement a transitional duty program for businesses of any size. The presentation will then explore strategies for maintaining an effective transitional duty program and evolving it as the business evolves.

11:15 am – 12:15 am: Louisiana Legislature: Updates and News for 2022-2023

This presentation will discuss recent changes in Louisiana law as it related to the insurance industry. We will discuss the short-term and long-term impact of these recent changes in the industry. We will also discuss other topics and issues that the Legislature will address for the 2023-2024 years.

1:00 pm – 2:15 pm: How to Prepare an Injured Worker for Recovery

Injured workers want to get better, they just don’t know how. The presentation will explore the “four pillars of recovery” – mindset, nutrition, physical activity, and rest, and how those pillars support an effective post-education program to help injured employees better understand their critical role in their own recovery. The discussion will cover the value of each pillar and how they work together to improve outcomes. The presentation will also cover the importance of having a “coach” in the recovery education process to keep injured workers engaged and building in them a “can do” attitude and helping injured workers celebrate and measure their wins and optimize their recovery.

2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Best Practices for a Successful SPHM Program

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) caused by patient lifting, transferring, repositioning, and boosting represent many of the most common and severe workplace injuries in member facilities each year. This presentation will be a discussion of the best practices that facilities should implement to create and sustain a successful safe patient handling and mobility program. In addition, an overview of the LHATF Workers’ Compensation Quality Initiative on SPHM findings and current status of the program.

Non-members are also welcome to attend for a $495 fee.
